Helping QIMR in their quest to "prevent and cure cancer through research"

About

Everyone knows at least one person who has been affected by cancer. Did you know that; 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85 and that Cancer is the leading cause of death in Australia – more than 43,000 people died from cancer in 2010. PGA Golf Professional Josh Marris is aiming to play 10 rounds of golf in 24 hours. All proceeds will be donated to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research.

Victoria Park Supports 24 Hour Challenge

The golf course at the Victoria Park Golf Complex in the Brisbane CBD will be the site of the challenge. To show their support, the Victoria Park Complex will remain open during the night with the general public having access to the driving range, putt-putt golf and pro shop during the 24 Hour Charity Golf Challenge.

The Challenge

I will play golf continuously for 24 hours at the Victoria Park Golf Complex. I will be walking the golf course with the aim of completing 10 rounds. It is estimated that a total distance of 60 kilometers will be walked on the day. The idea of this challenge is to test myself physically and mentally, pushing my body to its limits and experiencing fatigue in a way I've never felt before.

First tee off will be at 6:00am and approximately every 3 hours thereafter. I will play all through the night using fluorescent golf balls and glow stick on the flags, provided by Dynacast Factory.

Throughout the day, there will be two spots in my group for anyone wishing to join me and be a part of this challenge, with the proceeds going to QIMR. For more information about playing a round of golf with me, please contact me directly on 0411 032 764.

All for a good cause: Queensland Institute of Medical Research

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) is one of Australia's largest and most successful medical research institutes and is recognised worldwide for the quality of its research.

Our 700 researchers, visiting scientists and students are investigating nearly 50 diseases.

No matter how large or small, your support will enable critical and potentially life saving research to be undertaken at QIMR. The health of you, your family and friends could one day depend on the breakthroughs being made by our researchers.

How did this come about?

When my mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, just days after my aunty had her final chemo treatment for the same thing, I decided I wanted to set myself a challenge and raise money for cancer research.

When I mentioned to a mate that I couldn't get my head around the idea of Mum losing her hair, he suggested I shave my head. I've done this before for the Leukemia Foundation but it just didn't seem enough this time. I felt I wanted to do something that would challenge me mentally and physically, especially given the challenge that is ahead for my Mum with chemotherapy and radium treatment and the rollercoaster ride my aunt has had during the past 6 months with her treatment.
